Wriddhiman Saha secures India A opportunity to reclaim Test position

When he embarks on the Caribbean tour with the India A team after the World Cup, Wriddhiman Saha will have the chance to demonstrate his potential for a comeback into India’s Test squad. The tour will consist of five one-day matches (scheduled from July 11 to 21) and three four-day matches (scheduled from July 24 to August 9), conveniently leading up to the senior India team’s tour of the West Indies in early August.

An array of injuries has prevented Saha from representing India since the initial Test of their South Africa tour in January 2018. He has been selected in the India A squad for all three four-day matches in the West Indies, with KS Bharat as the other wicketkeeping alternative. Rishabh Pant, the current Test keeper, is not a part of the four-day squad but is included in the one-day squad.

With India’s imminent West Indies tour, the India A squad encompasses numerous players who are expected to be part of the senior team, including Test batsmen Prithvi Shaw, Mayank Agarwal, and Hanuma Vihari. Shaw and Agarwal, alongside KL Rahul, have lately established themselves as the three primary Test openers, consequently leading to the diminishing favor for the more experienced duo of M Vijay and Shikhar Dhawan.

Both Vijay and Dhawan are absent from the India A squads in the West Indies, signaling that the selectors may now be considering alternatives. One of the batsmen who may be in contention for a top-order position is Shubman Gill, who recently debuted in ODI cricket in New Zealand and has been chosen for both squads for the West Indies fixtures.

Aside from the squads for the West Indies tour, the senior national selection committee, chaired by MSK Prasad, has also unveiled the India A squads for a home series against Sri Lanka A, commencing on May 25. This series will involve two four-day matches and five one-dayers, all to be held in the towns of Belgaum and Hubli in Karnataka.
