India A 411 for 2 (Agarwal 220*, Shaw 136) leading South Africa A 246 (Second 94, Siraj 5-56) by 165 runs

Even after an exciting Edgbaston Test, there remain unanswered questions about India’s top order. The batting coach Sanjay Bangar indirectly criticized Shikhar Dhawan and KL Rahul’s reckless dismissals in the first Test, and raised concerns about Cheteshwar Pujara’s difficulties overseas. Prithvi Shaw, an eighteen-year-old, and Mayank Agarwal have intensified the pressure on the senior team’s top order and chief selector MSK Prasad by effortlessly achieving centuries in a double-century opening partnership against South Africa A on the second day at the Chinnaswamy Stadium.
Shaw was out for 136 from 196 balls, while Agarwal recorded his second 200-plus score in the past year. He had previously scored an unbeaten 304 against Maharashtra in the Ranji Trophy last November.
Shaw had recently scored three centuries in England, including a remarkable 74-ball hundred that triggered a remarkable comeback for India A against West Indies A at the Kent County Cricket Ground. Shaw signaled his return to form with a commanding knock, marked by assertive drives in the area between backward point and mid-off. The South African bowlers, with sloppy deliveries offering generous width without much movement, further facilitated Shaw’s innings. Their lengths were either too full or too short, ultimately leading to their downfall.

Fast bowler Mohammed Siraj swiftly dismissed the remaining two South African wickets, bowling them out for their overnight score of 246, achieving his second five-wicket haul in first-class cricket. In contrast, South Africa took 353 deliveries to find their first breakthrough on the second day.

Agarwal made a strong start, hitting four flawless boundaries with his first four scoring shots. Meanwhile, Shaw initially struggled, missing deliveries outside off, but subsequently adjusted his footwork to consistently find gaps through the off-side field. He brought up the fifty partnership in the 11th over by flat-batting seamer Malusi Siboto through cover point, before effortlessly striking eight fours off Siboto in the morning session.
Spin was introduced through Shaun von Berg in the 15th over, but the openers persisted in reducing the deficit. Shaw slog-swept a low full toss from von Berg for a one-bounce four and Agarwal hit a six over mid-off in the legspinner’s next over. Left-arm spinner Senuran Muthusamy also faced the brunt of their attack. By lunch, the deficit had decreased to 124.

Agarwal reached his century after the break, nudging one to mid-off off his 102nd ball. He expressed his jubilation before Shaw embraced him. Shortly after, Shaw also reached his hundred off 116 balls with a forceful shot to the right of slip. They achieved their landmarks and erased the deficit 20 minutes before tea.

With the ball losing its edge, the field spreading out, and the bowlers tiring, Shaw and Agarwal calmly accumulated runs by nudging the ball into the gaps. Offspinner Dane Piedt, however, managed to breach Shaw’s defense, bowling him out in the 59th over.

Agarwal, on the other hand, continued unfazed, reaching 150 off 172 deliveries with a robust loft over mid-off. His Karnataka teammate and schoolmate R Samarth provided excellent support in a 118-run partnership for the second wicket. While the local crowd cheered every boundary from the home team, the South Africans persisted.

They employed two short midwickets and a leg gully against Agarwal and hurled a barrage of short balls aimed at the batsman’s body. Despite Duanne Olivier’s aggressive deliveries, Agarwal rode the bounce and navigated through. He reached a double century by emphatically whipping Siboto to the midwicket boundary in the 76th over.

The reintroduction of the second new ball provided some relief for the visitors, as Olivier induced an edge behind from Samarth, who reached out for an outswinger. Samarth departed after scoring 37. Agarwal and captain Shreyas Iyer closed out the day, extending the lead to 165 at stumps.

While South Africa’s main team excelled in an ODI in Kandy, their A team struggled against a robust onslaught. All six bowlers employed by them went for four or more runs per over.
