Mohammed Shami among top ten bowlers, while Mayank Agarwal climbs to No. 11 in batsmen category

Mohammed Shami and Mayank Agarwal, the standout performers in India’s dominant 130-run triumph over Bangladesh in the Indore Test, made significant advancements in the ICC Test rankings. They now hold the seventh and 11th positions among bowlers and batsmen, respectively, in the latest update.

Shami delivered figures of 3 for 27 and 4 for 31 as Bangladesh were dismissed for 150 and 213, while Agarwal crafted a remarkable 243 – his second double-century in just 12 Test innings – contributing to India’s declaration at 493 for 6.

Shami’s outstanding performance propelled him up eight places in the rankings to a career-high No. 7, positioning him three spots below Jasprit Bumrah and three spots above No. 10 R Ashwin. Shami’s current rating of 790 points is also the third best among India’s fast bowlers, surpassing all but Kapil Dev (877) and Bumrah (832).

On the other hand, Agarwal narrowly missed a spot in the top ten, which is currently occupied by his teammates Virat Kohli at No. 2, Cheteshwar Pujara at No. 4, Ajinkya Rahane at No. 5, and Rohit Sharma at No. 10. The 28-year-old batsman has had a remarkable beginning to his Test career, amassing 858 runs in just eight matches, averaging 71.50, and achieving three centuries and three half-centuries.

From Bangladesh’s perspective, it was a disappointing start to the World Test Championship campaign as they succumbed to a defeat in the first of two Tests within three days. However, Mushfiqur Rahim’s noteworthy scores of 43 and 64 elevated him by five spots to No. 30, while Abu Jayed, the fast bowler who claimed four wickets in the Indian innings, leapt to the 62nd position, a rise of 18 spots.
Among the other Indian players who performed well in Indore, Ravindra Jadeja moved up to a joint-35th position among batsmen (alongside Australia’s Marnus Labuschagne) after his unbeaten 60, while Ishant Sharma and Umesh Yadav, Shami’s fast-bowling teammates, gained one spot each, moving to No. 20 and No. 22, respectively.
India’s victory in Indore marked an undefeated run in the World Test Championship, accruing a maximum of 300 points from six Tests. In contrast, New Zealand and Sri Lanka, who have only played two games so far, lag far behind with 60 points each. The series’ second and final Test will be played under lights in Kolkata from November 22.
